Laurita Winery | NJ Engagement Session | Caitlin & Jonathan

If we’re being honest, I may have squealed a little bit when I signed onto Facebook a few months ago and saw that Caitlin was engaged! Caitlin and I met a few years ago back in college where we were both members of the Orientation Committee (YAY Mighty OC!). We were placed in the same squad and spent the week (before the incoming class arrived!) bonding with each other and our team members while making late night runs for Rita’s and participating in ALL of the ice breaker activities!

I can remember Caitlin telling me about Jonathan (also a Drew alum!) and their shared passion for marching band. It was clear that Jonathan was someone very special! When Caitlin and I met up to talk about her wedding, she shared with me that Jonathan proposed to her on Thanksgiving Day. Before dinner, each family member took a moment to share something they were thankful for. When it was Jonathan’s turn, he asked Caitlin to marry him. Does it get any sweeter than that?! I think not!

We had such a wonderful time exploring the incredible grounds of Laurita Winery together! Caitlin & Jonathan were so comfortable in front of the camera, and I loved watching how much fun they were having with each other. They had my assistant and I laughing our way through the vineyard!

Congratulations on your engagement, Caitlin & Jonathan! I can’t wait to celebrate with you both at Drew in January!

NJ Engagement Session | Ramapo College | Neil + Rebecca

Neil + Rebecca’s winter engagement session is going down in the books as one of my all time favorites!  We took photos at all of the places that they visited on their first date together.  Such a sweet idea!  Our first stop of the day was at the local diner.  It wasn’t too busy that afternoon, and we were actually able to sit in the same booth that they ate in on their first date!  After we took a few portraits at the diner we drove over to Ramapo College.  I was in awe at the beautiful buildings and architecture — the photo opportunities were seriously endless!  Our last stop was at the Ramapo Reservoir.  Such an incredible location complete with lakes, bridges, and abandoned brick buildings (my favorite!).

Congratulations on your engagement, Neil + Rebecca!  It was such a joy to work with you both. I can’t wait to see you again in August!

Enjoy a few of my favorites from their session 🙂

Fort Mott State Park | Pennsville NJ | Erica + Sean

A little rain couldn’t stop us from having a fun afternoon at Fort Mott! Erica is Ryan’s younger sister, and the four of us (five if you count May!) met up a few weeks ago to take photos of them to give to their family members as Christmas presents. Such a sweet idea!

Erica & her sweet boyfriend Sean have been together for over TWO years now. It’s amazing how quickly time flies! Erica & Sean were so comfortable & relaxed in front of the camera. I loved watching how much fun they were having together during the whole experience! Erica is such a talented artist who is finishing up her senior year of college with a major in advertising & Sean is an amazing guitar player in a band. They’re both very special people who are so in love with each other. I couldn’t be prouder of them & their accomplishments! I’m so looking forward to seeing all of the exciting things that are in store for them during the upcoming years.

Enjoy some of my favorites from their session! Happy Tuesday 🙂

NJ Engagement Session | Andrew + Colleen

Andrew & Colleen’s engagement session was unlike ANY session that I’ve ever photographed before…. and I was loving every moment of it! The three of us met in their new neighborhood on Sunday afternoon in front of their future home, which was originally a hat factory. I mean, really, does it get any cooler than that?! I always love to see older buildings and houses repurposed…. especially places like this with so much history!

Andrew & Colleen are such a sweet, warm, & fun loving couple…. and I absolutely loved spending my afternoon with them! AND, they were wonderful sports and let me pull them down each and every alleyway and construction zone that I could find, haha! We walked around and explored different parts of their new neighborhood while they told me all about their love story, the local art scene, and the best places to grab a bite to eat.

Congratulations on your engagement, Andrew & Colleen! I’m SO looking forward to your wedding this summer! Enjoy some of my absolute favorites from their engagement session 🙂

Laurelwood Arboretum, NJ | Engagement Session | Alyson + Andrew

Ooh these two!  Alyson + Andrew are the absolute sweetest and a total dream couple. They came down to New Jersey all the way from Boston for their engagement session & engagement party!  They brought their sweet puppy Lacey down with them for some sweet photos too…. how CUTE is she?!  After e-mailing back and forth with Alyson after they booked, I discovered that she and Andrew are also Fixer Upper fans AND they love Maine… not going to lie, my heart sang a little bit, haha!  Needless to say we had plenty to talk about during their engagement session.

Congratulations on your engagement, Alyson + Andrew!  I am so excited for your wedding day next year!  Enjoy some of the photos we took during their session. They are too cute!

Lambert’s Castle Engagement | Garrett Mountain Reservation | Katie + Steve

Last weekend, I met Katie + Steve at Lambert’s Castle to photograph their engagement session! Talk about a dream worthy location — an incredible stone castle that sits way up high on a mountain top and overlooks the beautiful New York City skyline.  It was so great getting to know and photograph this fun loving, sweet, and joyful couple!

Steve + Katie began their long distance relationship back in August of 2015.  He proposed to Katie last May by taking her to a beautiful park and reading her a story book that he had written and illustrated all about their relationship and their story — and, well, the rest is history!

Katie + Steve, congratulations on your engagement!  I absolutely cannot wait to photograph your wedding next month!

What to Wear to an Engagement Session

Screen Shot 2016-03-10 at 7.44.35 AM

One of the most common questions I’ve been asked after setting a date for an engagement session is “Tori. What do I wear?!  Help!” Picking out an outfit for an engagement session can seem like a daunting task.  The fear starts to set in when the date gets closer. Should I stick with muted colors or go bold?  Will this pattern look too wild in my photos?  What if this shirt washes me out?  Trust me, I totally get it!  As a photographer, I want to help you to look AND feel your best during our shoot.  Here are a few tips to help you curate the perfect outfits so that you both feel comfortable, confident, and nail your engagement session!

  1. Coordinate Outfits, Don’t Match.  Wear colors that compliment each other, but that don’t match!  Let’s say you’re planning on wearing a beautiful blush tulle skirt with a long sleeved white top. Your hubby-to-be would look amazing if he wore dark wash navy jeans, a solid white button up shirt with a light gray pullover sweater on top. All of these colors work so well together without being matchy-matchy!  That being said, if you REALLY want wear outfits that coordinate color-wise, think about choosing a color from the same family instead of the exact same color.
  2. Color & Pattern.  Stick with solid colors and minimal pattern.  No logos or writing! Bold colors like mustard yellows, royal blues, and rich magentas are your friends! These colors will add some “pop” and make your photographs come alive.  If your other half decides to wear a pattern, think about going with a solid color to prevent any clashing.  You can still have visual interest with solid colors that have great texture.
  3. Layers.  If you’re engagement session is in a cold month, think about wearing different layers!  This allows for more outfit combinations, PLUS, layers are great for posing and give you something to do with your hands!
  4. Accessorize.  Your personalities should shine through in your engagement photos!  Think about wearing a bold statement necklace, bangles, or that pair of heels that you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to showcase!
  5. Location. A session for an outdoorsy and adventurous couple is going to look and feel very different than a session for a couple in love with all things chic and classic.  The engagement session is all about YOU and should reflect who you are as a couple.  If ballgowns and up-do’s are your thing, go rock it out!  Not a dress and high heels kind of girl? Then wear your flannel jacket and put your Bean Boots on!
  6. Options.  Bring another outfit or two along with you, this way you’ll have some different choices when it comes to picking out save the dates!  If you’re wearing a dress, maybe you’ll want to switch things up later in your session with jeans.
  7. Be Comfortable.  If you’re not comfortable, you won’t feel confident.  When I deliver your photo gallery, I want you to remember how much fun you had together and how beautiful you felt — not how much your feet hurt from the flats that were a little too snug!
  8. Professional Hair/Makeup.  I always suggest to all of my clients that they consider investing in having their hair and make up professionally done the day of their engagement session.  The professionals know how to make your hair and make up perfect for photos, plus, you’ll feel great!

Happy Thursday, friends!
